Ice Hockey
Rules of the Game

4 vs. 4, “Pond-Style”
Game Format
  • Proper identification is required to check out hockey equipment: no CC ID-no equipment-no exceptions.
  • Players are to remain off the ice while the Zamboni is resurfacing.
  • All players must wear helmets and hockey skates. Protective equipment is optional but highly recommended.
  • Goalie equipment and goalie sticks are not permitted.
  • The league will be co-ed in nature. At least ONE member of any underrepresented gender must be on the ice at all times.
  • Players may only play on one team.
  • Each team is allowed only ONE Men's Club team player on the roster
  • 4 v 4, no goalie.
  • The game will consist of two 12-minute halves with a 2-minute halftime. The clock will run the entire time.
  • Substitutions must be made within the designated substitution area at the blue line and can be made during play, “on-the-fly”, or while a puck is being retrieved. There is no stoppage of play after a goal is scored or after a penalty is awarded.
Rules of the Game
  • To begin the game, teams can elect to have a faceoff or give possession to one team to start. The other team will start the second half and the teams will switch goals after the first half.
  • There will be one referee for each game. Referees will have the discretion to also award a "penalty shot" to the opposing team when a minor penalty is flagrant and/or a team is consistently playing in a reckless manner.
    • Penalty shots will be taken from center ice and must be attempted within 30 seconds of the penalty being called. Anyone on the opposing team can take the shot. The team that is awarded the penalty shot will also be given possession of the puck following the penalty shot attempt (regardless of the outcome of the shot).

  • Any major penalty, which includes any action that could possibly injure another player, will result in that player being ejected from the game and will be prohibited from participating in the team’s next two games. The team that received the ejection will play the remainder of the game short-handed (3v4 or 2v3).
  • Abuse of officials will be considered a major penalty. This includes yelling, swearing, or arguing about calls.
  • Checking is not allowed. Such action will result in a minor penalty unless deemed serious enough to be a major.
  • Slapshots are not allowed. Such action will result in a minor penalty.
  • Players cannot fall or lay on the ice in an effort to protect the goal area. Such action will result in a minor penalty.
  • Goaltending is not allowed. A player may not patrol, "camp out" or remain stationary in the crease area and act as a goaltender. A defender may deflect the puck in the crease area, but the defender must do so while continuing to move through the crease area.
  • The crease area is defined as an imaginary box extending out four feet from the outside corners of the goal. Goaltending also applies to offensive players in the offensive zone/goal as well.
  • Contacting the puck with a stick above the waist will result in a loss of possession.
  • If a puck goes out of bounds, the last team to touch it loses possession. During restart, the defender must give his opponent 2-stick lengths of space.
  • There are no off-sides or icing calls.
  • Goals can be scored from any area of the rink.
  • Teams must give their opponents 1/2 ice after a goal is scored or an infraction takes place.
Game infractions

Fighting: at the discretion of the referees and/or league supervisor, players guilty of fighting will be automatically ejected from the game. If ejected from a game, a player is automatically suspended from his/her team's next TWO scheduled competitions. Any player using his/her stick or other equipment as a weapon will be ejected from all IM competitions. Anytime a "bench clears", a forfeit will be automatically called for that team(s) and individual penalties handed down after consultation with the Director of Campus Rec and all parties involved.

High sticking: if a player raises his/her stick above four feet, high sticking will be called. High sticking can be waived if an opposing player gains control of the puck as a result of the high sticking.

Hand passing: hand passing is not allowed in either the offensive or neutral zones. Infractions will result in a face-off at the spot of the foul.

Slapshots: slapshots are NOT permitted in any of the leagues. In the event that a slapshot occurs, the puck will be called back to the offending team's defensive zone with play resuming via face-off. If a slapshot occurs in the 3 vs. 3 League, possession will be given to the opposing team.

Other penalties: the list of penalties that a referee may call includes, but is not limited to: checking, roughing, interference, elbowing, bench penalty, and a game misconduct.
