Indoor Volleyball
Rules of the Game

All volleyball games are played in aux gym in the El Pomar Sports Complex and the rec gym in the fitness center. League play is organized in accordance with a round robin format. Final season rankings will be determined by 1) winning percentage, 2) head to head play, and/or 3) a tie-breaker. The top teams in each division will advance to a single elimination (or double elimination depending on number of teams) tournament to determine the overall champion.

ELIGIBILITY

  • All players must check-in with the officials or supervisor on duty and be on a valid roster before they are allowed to play.
  • A player may only play for ONE team.
  • Teams may add players to their roster up until the start of their second match.
    • However, that player must not have played for another team during the same season.
  • Players may not "jump" leagues or teams. Failure to observe this rule will result in a forfeit.

NUMBER OF PLAYERS

  • Six (6) players are allowed on the court for each team.
  • Three players will occupy the front row, and three in the back row, behind the attack line.
  • Teams must have TWO members of any under-represented gender(s) on the court at all times.
  • A team may play with no fewer than four players.
  • If a team only has one player of the underrepresented gender(s), they must play with four players.
  • No Varsity athletes of this sport are allowed to participate.

SCORING

  • Also in accordance with new NCAA and International Rules, matches will be determined by the winner in a best of three game series.
  • Rally scoring to 25 points will determine the winner of the first two games; the third game will be rally to 15 points.

FORFIETS

  • A forfeit will be assessed when a team fails to be present with the required number of players at 10 minutes past a scheduled game time.
  • Forfeits are "one and done" meaning, once a forfeit occurs your team will be removed from the season and/or tournament.

SUBSTITUTIONS

  • Open substitutions are in effect and can be made at any dead ball.
  • Substitutions must be made for the same position and in the course of rotation.
  • All substitutes must have checked in with an official or supervisor to verify they are on the roster before they are allowed to play.

SERVING

  • The serve may be made anywhere behind the end line within the boundaries of the sidelines.
  • If any part of the server's foot touches the line while attempting a serve, a "foot fault" will be called and one point will be awarded to the opposing team.
  • A service is considered a fault when:
    • The server is touching the service line when the ball is contacted
    • The served ball crosses under the net; the ball touches or crosses over the antenna
    • The ball touches a player on the server's team
    • The ball land outside the opponent's playing area
  • In accordance with new NCAA and International Rules, the ball will be allowed to touch the net on a serve and remain in play.
  • NO blocking/hitting the serve from the opponent.

FUNDAMENTAL RULES

  • Lines on the court are considered in-play.
  • The rotation of players occurs in a clockwise manner.
  • One timeout per game will be granted to each team.
  • Each team is allowed a maximum of three successive contacts of the ball in order to return the ball over the net onto the opponent's side
    • Any player participating in a block shall have the right to make the next contact, such contact counts as the first of three hits allowed for the team
    • Any other player committing successive contacts with the ball will be called for a double hit
    • The ball may be hit with any part of the body
  • A live ball becomes dead when:
    • The ball touches an antenna or the net outside the antenna
    • The ball does not cross the net completely
    • The ball hits the floor
    • The ball contacts side wall, back wall, or basketball hoop
    • A player commits a foot fault; or a served ball contacts the net
    • The same player contacts the ball twice
    • The ball is hit four (4) times before going over the net
    • A player makes contact with the live part of the net
    • Any part of the body fully crosses the middle line (unless the player is outside the boundaries of the court)
    • A double hit is called; a lift is called
    • An illegal back row attack is called
    • A player and/or ball crosses into another court
      • When a player and/or ball from another court comes onto a court in progress, play is stopped, no point is awarded, and the call is a replay

FAULTS

  • Crossing the centerline is considered a foot fault.
  • Contact by any part of the body with the net except the hair or clothing is a fault when the ball is in play.
  • A back row player returning the ball to the opponent's side may not jump if they're in front of the ten-foot line and must contact the ball when any part of the ball is below the level of the top of the net.
    • This restriction does not apply if the player jumps clearly from behind the ten foot line.
  • A lift may be called when a player uses an open face-up palm to push the ball up on a non-athletic play, or when any part of the body makes prolonged contact
  • It's illegal to catch or throw the ball. The ball must rebound from the hit.
  • Attacking when the ball is completely on the other side of the net is illegal.
    • Once the ball breaks the vertical net plane (part of the ball is directly above the net) anyone can make a play on the ball.
  • If a ball is contacted into the net by Team A, on the first or second contact, and Team B contacts said ball (through the net) with a forward motion, a point will be rewarded to Team A
