Overview

The Office of Sustainability at Colorado College empowers students to lead meaningful climate and sustainability initiatives on campus. Since 2013, our office has supported innovative, student-driven projects that shape campus culture and advance Colorado College’s sustainability goals. If you’re passionate about creating real change and want hands-on experience leading impactful work, consider joining our team.

Through the OOS Student Employee Program, we offer immersive, hands-on learning experiences where students pursue their passions while building community and strengthening their sense of place at Colorado College. The program empowers students to grow as leaders, clarify their values, and develop the skills needed to integrate sustainability into their lives and careers beyond CC.

Learning Objectives
  • Explain how sustainability practices contribute to a healthier, more resilient, and more equitable world for people and ecosystems.

  • Develop professional and transferable skills such as leadership, project management, teamwork, critical thinking, and communication.

  • Understand how their work contributes to advancing sustainability within a larger organization, including making Colorado College more sustainable.

  • Apply their learning in a professional environment that strengthens personal values and prepares them to integrate sustainability into future career paths.

  • Demonstrate systems thinking by connecting seemingly separate sustainability topics, including frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Office of Sustainability Positions

The Office of Sustainability’s Student Employment Program is organized into five teams: Communications & Administrative, Institutional Data & Insights (STARS & Emissions), CC Exchange, Sustainability Engagement, and Campus Operations.

Each team includes 2–3 student leaders who design programs, collect and analyze data, host events, and launch initiatives within their focus area. Together, they advance sustainability efforts across campus throughout the academic year. Below is an overview of each team’s work and responsibilities.

Eligibility & Commitment
New student employees must be enrolled and on campus for both semesters. Studying away for up to two blocks in one semester is acceptable; however, students taking a full semester off are not eligible.

Meetings
Regular attendance at team meetings is required. This includes:

  • One all-office meeting per block (Tuesdays, 8:00–8:45 a.m., first week of each block)
  • Weekly intern meetings during the 2nd and 3rd weeks of each block (Tuesdays, 3:30–4:30 p.m.)
  • Occasional additional meetings as scheduled by the Program Manager

If you anticipate frequent schedule conflicts (e.g., study abroad, athletics travel, heavy co-curricular commitments), this role may not be the best fit.

Time Commitment
Student employees work 10–15 hours per week.

New hires are required to work 5 hours per week in person during Blocks 1 and 2 (weeks 1–3). After that, schedules are flexible, with a mix of in-person and remote work depending on responsibilities. Hours may vary during the fourth week of each block and academic breaks.

Given the time-intensive nature of these on-campus positions, applicants are encouraged to apply with intention and a clear understanding of the commitment involved.

PikeRide Positions

PikeRide launched in 2018 and is a local nonprofit bike share system, operating a fleet of e-assist bikes in Downtown Colorado Springs, Old Colorado City, and Manitou Springs. Colorado College has been a sponsor and partner of PikeRide since its inception. All students, faculty, and staff have complimentary memberships available to them, and Colorado College comprises the largest portion of riders in the PikeRide service area. As a result, our campus is a bustling hub of PikeRide activity and needs daily servicing, rebalancing, and general upkeep to keep the fleet available and convenient for our campus community. The Office of Sustainability has partnered with PikeRide to meet this need with CC students who enjoy biking, being outside, and providing access to transportation and mobility for our community.

The Bike Share Fleet Mechanic will work closely with the PikeRide Operations Manager to service the bike share fleet in Colorado Springs. Mechanics will help maintain a safe and reliable fleet of bikes by conducting repairs, maintenance, overhauls, and safety checks. PikeRide operates a fleet of electric-assist bikes so some minor electrical knowledge is required.

PikeRide’s team will train all hires on technical aspects of our innovative bike share technology. Mechanics will report to the operations management team. Competitive candidates will have experience with bike maintenance, repairs, and a willingness to learn.

Bike Share Field Technicians will work closely with the PikeRide Operations Manager to help rebalance the PikeRide fleet using an e-assist bicycle or trike distributing bikes, moving bikes to new locations, taking them to our service location for repair, monitoring and charging bike batteries, and performing basic repairs to the bicycles. Technicians will become masters of Downtown Colorado Springs geography and bicycle infrastructure. Technicians also will be our eyes in the field to ensure all hubs and bikes are well-kept and managed while being certain the PikeRide brand is represented positively. Field Technicians will occasionally be requested to represent PikeRide at community events. All PikeRide staff begin as field technicians and once mastering the role are encouraged to engage in on-the-job training as fleet mechanics to support knowledge growth.
