Safety

It is often believed that lighting at night helps reduce crime and increase safety.

This is not always the case.

Over-lighting can actually be the source of more safety hazards.

Multiple studies have found no real evidence linking increased lighting and reduced crime
"Glare from nighttime lighting can create hazards ranging from discomfort to frank visual disability."

Hazards of Glare

Glare and Types of Lighting:

  • LED can make glare worse
  • Short wavelength light (cool light) causes stronger glare than long wavelength light (warm light)

What does this mean?

  • Use warm colored lights (see guide for responsible outdoor lighting)
  • Although there are many benefits to LEDs, it's important to be diligent when using LEDs. Check out the IDA's LED Practical Guide to learn more about safe lighting
