Technology offers diverse and rapidly evolving career opportunities that can be found in almost all industries. It is impossible to briefly summarize the range of technology opportunities. As a way to begin to explore the possible technology opportunities, see below for a few common technology positions.

Software Engineer

A software engineer designs, develops, and maintains software applications and systems. They use programming languages, algorithms, and problem-solving skills to create efficient and reliable software solutions for various industries and user needs.

Data Scientist

A data scientist extracts insights and knowledge from vast amounts of data by utilizing statistical analysis, programming skills, and domain expertise. They employ various tools and techniques to solve complex problems, make data-driven decisions, and develop predictive models to drive business and scientific advancements. In contrast to data analysts, data scientists use unstructured and structured data, deal more with the unknown by using data to make predictions about the future, and requires more of an ability to develop new tools and methods to extract and analyze data.

User Experience (UX Designer)

A User Experience (UX) Designer focuses on creating meaningful and engaging experiences for users interacting with digital products or services. They research user needs, conduct usability testing, and design intuitive interfaces to ensure a positive and user-friendly interaction with the product or service. IT Technician

An IT Technician provides technical support to users within an organization. They diagnose and resolve hardware and software issues, install and configure computer systems, and ensure the smooth operation of IT infrastructure, including networks, servers, and peripherals.

Web Developer

A web developer designs and builds websites using coding languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. They are responsible for creating the visual layout, functionality, and overall user experience of a website, ensuring it is compatible across different browsers and devices. Product Manager

A product manager oversees the development and management of a product throughout its lifecycle. They are responsible for defining the product strategy, prioritizing features, coordinating cross-functional teams, and ensuring the product meets customer needs while aligning with business goals.

There are many options to get involved at Colorado College and develop your career competencies. Get involved to deepen your understanding of an industry and help you decide if a job in this field is of interest to you. Planning your experience can feel daunting, so check out some industry specific ideas both on and off campus below. As you plan, meet with the Advising Hub to discuss your major and academic interests to ensure you’re on track for your academic plans as well.

  • Join the Coding Club to learn more about how to develop your skills
  • Work as a Quantitative Reasoning Center Tutor to help students with STEM coursework and enhance technological skills. Positions are posted on Handshake.
  • Join the ITS team to further develop technological and problem solving skills. 
  • Work as a computer Science Grader to help grade computer science assignments. Positions are posted on Handshake
  • Research with a Computer Science professor. Look at positions on Handshake and/or contact a professor to learn more about their research opportunities.
  • Complete a Computer Science major. A Computer Science degree isn’t necessarily required for a technology position, but it can be a great way to develop the necessary technical skills.
  • Use GitHub to create a website.
  • Participate in a hackathon to showcase your skills and network with other tech professionals.
  • Develop your skills with platforms that provide free content, such as LeetCode and Code Academy.
