Overview
Art History and Art Studio students have access to several facilities around campus including the Art and Technology Lab, Photography Lab, Print Shop, and Visual Resources Center in Packard Hall; classrooms and computer labs in Cornerstone Arts Center; the 3D Arts Spaces (Honnen and Robson Arena); Senior Studios; and Exhibition Spaces.
Constructed in 1976, The Sperry S. and Ella Graber Packard Hall of Music and Art was given by David Packard in memory of his parents. A distinguished New York architect, Edward Larrabee Barnes, designed the building in a modernist style.
Like his Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the Dallas Museum of Art, Packard Hall is organized around a barrel-vaulted space, at Colorado College a hallway gallery in which senior majors regularly show their work. The Art and Music Departments share the building.
Art studio activities are concentrated in the west block of the building which has printmaking and photography facilities on the lower level, two large painting and drawing studios on the first floor, faculty studios on the second floor, and senior art majors studios on the third floor.
The spaces above the ground floor have large balconies looking out towards Pikes Peak and the Front Range of the Rockies.
Art history classrooms are located on the ground level and the first floor.
Art resources in Packard Hall include the Art + Technology Lab, the Art Library Lounge, the Photography Lab, the Print Shop, and the Visual Resources Center.
Cornerstone Arts Center
The Edith Kinney Gaylord Cornerstone Arts Center was completed by Antoine Predock Architecture in 2008. The facility houses theatres, rehearsal rooms for drama, music, and dance, classrooms, and technology labs for media arts. These spaces promote and facilitate the interaction of artists and performers with each other, with casual observers, and with audiences from the college and the local community.
The Art Department holds classes in Digital Media Lab 415 and the Experimental Classroom. The Digital Arts and Media Workshops also take place in Cornerstone and Senior Art Majors have the opportunity to show their work in the Main Space and Studio C.
