"Writing Effective Abstracts of Your Research"

Writing an abstract for a research project is a complicated rhetorical task that masquerades as a simple one. How do you transform a lengthy written project or weeks of research into a brief and intelligible synopsis of your work? In this workshop, we will define the role and generic features of an abstract. Then participants will draft and workshop abstracts of their research. By the end of this session, participants should have a solid working draft of an abstract to incorporate into their posters for the Undergraduate Research Symposium.

You probably know that most research is shared with the wider world via peer-reviewed journal articles.  What goes into this, and how can new researchers navigate the complicated landscape of academic publishing?  In this forum we will discuss some of the relevant background information and the process of getting a paper published.  Topics will include choosing an appropriate journal, determining authorship, submitting a manuscript, the peer review process, and the appropriate choice of cocktail in response to each possible editor’s decision.  Please bring any questions you have about the process of turning your research into a publication.
