What is the Literary Publishing Practicum?

Hairstreak Butterfly Review is an online literary journal published by Colorado College’s English Department. We publish writers at all stages of their career and within diverse backgrounds, genres, and styles. Each issue of Hairstreak Butterfly Review features writing in three genres: poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. We also feature hybrid, genrequeer texts, prose poetry, visual poetry, visual/audio texts, etc. in our Instar section. While our issues are biannual, we publish interviews, reviews, and features by Colorado College students in a series column called The Flit.
Hairstreak Butterfly Review, named after the official Colorado state insect, embraces Colorado College’s aspiration for imaginative transformation and possibility in all we do. The journal offers a space for writing that stirs the senses and invokes things wild, sacred, daring, and visionary. We are as excited about feeling out the limits of genre, language, perspective, and narratives as we are about the careful rendering of that which makes humans human and keeps time waxing and waning.
The English Department faculty, guest editors, student assistant managers, and the Literary Publishing Practicum bring Hairstreak Butterfly Review to life. The Flit interviews and reviews are conducted by Colorado College students only. Please visit our masthead to see staff per issue.
Hairstreak Butterfly Review is made possible by the support of the Colorado College English Department, Indigenous Studies, Creativity and Innovation at CC (2020), the NEH Fellowship (2017-2020), the President's Office (2016-2019), the Dean of Faculty's office (2016-2019), and the Schlosser Professorship (2020-2023).
What is the Literary Publishing Practicum?
The Lit Pub Practicum is a ½ credit adjunct course run throughout Spring semester. Students typically meet two times during each block for class and attend additional panels, readings, etc. regularly. The course is for students interested in publishing—as editors, publishers, and/or writers. Students participate as staff for Hairstreak Butterfly Review while encountering the terrain of literary writers and writing community citizenship. They learn and discuss best practices in publishing, meet freelance writers, research job opportunities, and keep up with current trends and concerns in publishing. Students are active members of the submission reading process and are credited as assistant managers, editors, and reading assistants.
