Environmental justice in Colorado Springs: Intersections of residential segregation, industrial siting, and air pollution
The research highlights the history of residential segregation and the distribution of environmental hazards in Colorado Springs, focusing on the effect of air pollution on different communities. Environmental justice literature suggests that low-income communities of color, primarily Black and Latinx, are more significantly impacted by air pollution versus higher-income/white communities, resulting in higher asthma rates. The project explores how these patterns present themselves in the Colorado Springs metro area historically and today.
