Career Resources for Students of Color

In the career development and job search process, people of color may face unique considerations. Understanding these challenges and leveraging resources can help mitigate any obstacles. This page includes specific career-related resources for students of color based on race and ethnicity. However, we recognize that intersectionality of our identities exists for many of us, and we encourage you to look at the other pages on our Identity-Based Resources webpage.

Evaluating Employers

When navigating the job and internship search, you might consider evaluating the employer to determine if diversity is something they value. Consider the following questions and tips:

  • Is the employer on any national lists for companies with strong diversity and inclusion policies and programs? Check out Fair360’s list of top companies representing workplace fairness.
  • Does the employer have a diversity and inclusion mission, statement, or philosophy on their website?
  • Are there any programs or resources focused on specific groups?
  • Do the organization’s job postings contain language that reflects diversity and inclusivity?
  • What do others say about the organization’s culture? Check out resources like GlassDoor, The Vault, and other platforms.

Questions to Ask in an Interview:

Here are a few sample questions you can ask in an interview to help determine an organization’s commitment to diversity and inclusion:
  • What are your diversity and inclusion goals, and how do you measure success in those areas?
  • Can you describe the company’s diversity and inclusion training programs?
  • Can you provide an example of how the organization has addressed issues of inequality in the past?
  • Can you tell me about any employee resource groups or support networks for people of color?

Workplace Discrimination

Workplace discrimination can occur in many different ways. There are federal laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, disability, pregnancy, and age. Employers are responsible for following the law, however you are responsible for knowing your rights. 

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has published a resource with information about race/color discrimination. 

Here are some tips about navigating discrimination in the workplace.

Connect with Alumni

Connecting with other people of color can be a powerful source of support during the job and internship search. There are multiple avenues to find contacts to reach out to:

  • LinkedIn: Visit Colorado College’s Alumni Tab on LinkedIn to search through thousands of alums by a number of criteria. 
  • TigerLink: Connect with alumni by utilizing TigerLink, CC’s in-house networking platform. 
  • Professional Associations: Consider joining identity-based professional associations to connect with other professionals with similar interests and backgrounds as yourself.

Diversity.com: Job board connecting inclusive employers to diverse talent.

Diversity Employers: Job board for companies committed to inclusivity and diversity.

Diversity Working: Large diversity job board.

IMDiversity Career Center: Career resource site for minority students.

INROADS: Organization with the mission of advancing diverse youth into corporate America. They have a number of programs, one of which is an internship program that places students into top companies.

National Association of Asian American Professionals: Promotes personal and professional development of the Asian American community. 

National Council of Asian Pacific Americans: A directory of links to Asian Pacific American organizations, many with career sites of their own.

List of Black Owned and Led Companies: List of Top 50 companies that are owned or led by people of color.

Black Professional Associations: List of identity-relevant professional associations.

Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement: Nonprofit that provides career resources and networking opportunities for Latino professionals.
