Cosgrove Student Research Funding

Contact

Mara Green (mgreen2024@coloradocollege.edu)

Description

Cosgrove Student Research Funding is intended to support History students (majors, hyphenated majors, and minors) working with History faculty mentors on historical research projects that cannot be undertaken at CC or through Inter-Library Loan. This research may occur during the regular academic year or, with faculty approval, during the summer. Students may apply to fund travel to libraries, archives or museums for on-site research, to conduct oral history interviews, or to gather other materials for research projects. We support direct travel costs, modest living expenses, and research costs up to $800 and encourage students to apply for Venture Grant Funding first or concurrently.

We specifically support projects that have been preapproved through Venture, projects related to a student's capstone, or projects that are being conducted in close collaboration with a faculty member.

Amount

Up to $800 per student

Application Requirements

  1. Detailed proposal describing the project, its timetable, and its specific research needs (i.e., listing the libraries/ archives/museums to be visited and the materials that the applicant hopes to examine). Please specifically describe what you hope the outcome of your research is (i.e. a paper, presentation, etc).
  2. Brief Letter of support from CC History Department member OR arrange for a History Department member to speak on your behalf at the department meeting.
  3. Detailed budget, with airfare or mileage, food and lodging costs, and research expenses (photocopying, images, etc.)
  4. Acknowledgement of funding upon receipt in written or oral presentations of research*

Due Date

Applications are accepted on a rolling bases and will be considered at the next department meeting (first Wednesday of each block) after submission. All materials should be submitted to Mara at mgreen2024@coloradocollege.edu. We ask for submissions to be submitted with at least two blocks of lead time prior to the dates of the project.

Robert D. McJimsey Summer Student Research Fellowship

Please note that there are no current opportunities for this fellowship in the summer of 2024. If opportunities become available, current History majors, minors, and hyphenated majors will be notified with the opportunities and new deadlines.

Mara Green (mgreen2024@coloradocollege.edu) or Professor Carol Neel (cneel@coloradocollege.edu

Description

Robert D. McJimsey Summer Research Awards may be offered yearly to up to two History, Classics-History-Politics, History-Political Science, History-Philosophy majors or History minors. Students must return to CC for at least one semester following the research award. Eligible students are those whose interests and skills match those of Colorado College History faculty sufficiently that they are able to support specific faculty in their research toward publication. Awards may be up to $4,800 for eight weeks (or prorated for shorter periods). In the course of these fellowships, students work closely with individual professors to identify primary sources, survey and assess scholarly criticism, and support various stages of research and writing, from the formation of a research question through the correction of page proofs. Although such student involvement is of benefit to faculty scholarship, the primary goal of McJimsey awards is to support the development of students' research interests and skills through apprenticeship. Here, especially able and engaged students are able to participate in publishable research and experience the steps through which a scholarly project moves from initial conception toward book or article form.

Amount

Awards may be up to $4,800 for eight weeks (or prorated for shorter periods).

Application Requirements

On the first Monday of Block 5 the History Department will release descriptions of summer projects that they are seeking student support for. Student will have until the third Monday of Block 5 to apply for these research positions. Students who are interested must submit a current resume, transcript, and cover letter that details why they are interested in the project and why they believe they would be a good fit for the position. Application materials should be sent to Mara Green (mgreen2024@coloradocollege.edu) with the email subject indicating the position you are applying for. Faculty may choose to conduct interviews at their own discretion.

By the last day of Block 5 faculty will announce their candidate selections. Faculty will then work with their selected students to formally apply for the McJimsey funding.

Due Date

Applications are due the third Monday of Block 5.

The History Department is not accepting student proposals for funding (please see the Cosgrove Research Fund if you are interested in such opportunities). Rather, we will publish a list of specific faculty projects which students can apply to be research assistants for.

Public History Fellowship at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum (CSPM)

Contact

Mara Green (mgreen2024@coloradocollege.edu) or Professor Amy Kohout (akohout@coloradocollege.edu)

Description

The History Department is delighted to announce an opportunity for two students (must be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior to apply): a public history fellowship with the CSPM.

The fellows will work closely with Professor Amy Kohout and the museum’s Curator of History, Leah Davis Witherow, to support a current museum project while learning about all aspects of the museum’s public history work. Previous fellows have conducted archival research, drafted exhibit text, and supported digital history projects. They have also worked in and with the museum’s collections and helped with special summer outreach events.

The museum has been closed for an extensive HVAC renovation, which is why we paused our fellowship program for 2023. The museum reopens on June 1, 2024! In summer 2024, our focus will be on helping to develop an exhibit focused on Civil Rights and Social Justice (a theme which might open up ways to think across a lot of Colorado history). We anticipate following a structure that will include a mixture of regular work at the museum (rotating through departments to experience a range of museum work), summer reading of relevant scholarship that will help with framing the new exhibit, as well as exhibit research and even some drafting of exhibit text.

Amount

$4800 for eight weeks

Application Requirements

To apply for this fellowship opportunity, send the following via email to Mara Green (mgreen2024@coloradocollege.edu) in the History Department:

(1) a short essay (1-2 pages) explaining why you are interested in this opportunity and how it connects to your larger academic program and personal goals

(2) a current resume

Due Date

Applications are due by the 4th Monday of Block 6 (March 11, 5 PM). Preference will be given to History and History-hyphenate majors and History minors. Decisions will be shared by the end of the first week of Block 7.

See Professor Amy Kohout (akohout@coloradocollege.edu) to learn more about this exciting opportunity.

Summer Internship Funding

Contact

The Career Center (careercenter@coloradocollege.edu) and Mara Green (mgreen2024@coloradocollege.edu)

Description

The Summer Internship Funding Awards Program increases the ability of Colorado College students to participate in internship opportunities, many of which remain unpaid (or underpaid). All currently enrolled Colorado College students who will return to campus for a minimum of one full semester beyond the summer funded are eligible to receive one award during their four undergraduate years. Students who discover their own independent interships may apply for this funding.

History majors, hyphenated majors, and minors who are pursuing history-related internships are encouraged to apply to the Summer Internship Funding Awards Program and work with the History department. Such students may be eligible for additional funding from the department.

Amount

Internship experiences lasting a minimum of 10 weeks and 400 hours are eligible for a $4000 stipend. Internship experiences lasting a minimum of 8 weeks and 240 hours are eligible for a $2500 stipend. The History Department may contribute additional funds for other elements that contribute toward the success and completion of the internship.

Application Requirements

The Office of the Dean of the College encourages you to submit your request for funding on the Summit portal early in the spring to ensure funds have not run out. Your internship does not need to be accepted or secured in order to apply. When you have accepted an experience and the employer confirmation is received, the office will work with you on adjustments to your application and their assessment of your eligibility for funds.

Due Date

The first deadline for consideration is March 15, 2024. The sooner you start your search, the more proactive you can be for this application. Applications will continue to be accepted until funds run out or May 15, whichever comes first. Please note: It is typical for the Career Center to allocate all funds and start a waiting list by April 1, so you are encouraged to submit your application as early as possible to avoid this uncertainty.

Apply for the following opportunities through the CC's Summit portal.
