HERITAGE sites include:
- The Forbidden City and Imperial Palace Museum, the largest and best-preserved collection of ancient buildings in China
- Mutianyu Great Wall, the best-preserved and most accessible section of the Great Wall
- Shijia Hutong’s narrow alleyways and tree-shaded courtyards, dating back to the 13th century
- Temple of Heaven, considered the supreme achievement of traditional Chinese architecture
- Mogao Caves, with splendid Buddhist art spanning a period of 1,000 years

- Chongqing, with Jialing River Bridge Systems and Yangtze River Cable Car
- Shanghai Astronomy Museum, the world’s largest museum of its kind
- Donghai Bridge, one of the longest sea-crossing bridges in the world
- Yangshan Deep-Water Port, a vast container terminal and dramatic display of maritime power
ENVIRONMENTAL sites include:
- Yangguan Forest Farm, designed to curb desertification and control sandstorms
- Dunhuang Solar Power Base, a landmark solar power system
- Yangtze River’s Three Gorges Dam, providing flood control, clean energy production, and enhanced river navigation
- Shanghai’s Yangpu Riverside North Bund, a rejuvenated waterfront
- Shanghai’s Suzhou Creek Promenade, a beautifully revitalized urban waterfront

Colorado College Faculty Leader
Professor Guanyi Yang looks forward to sharing insights with alumni on how China’s extraordinary cultural heritage and ambitious modernization projects reveal new ways of thinking about development and change. He was born in central China and has traveled widely across Central Asia and China for research on infrastructure and the Belt and Road, experiences that shape his view of China’s rapid modernization. Guanyi is a macroeconomist whose research explores inequality, labor markets, and long-run growth. At Colorado College, he teaches economics and business with an emphasis on connecting abstract models to lived experience. He received Colorado College’s Dean of the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award in 2024. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from The Ohio State University. Guanyi often combines Western economic models with perspectives rooted in Chinese philosophy and history to explore how societies adapt and grow.
