Summer 2024 Programming
I would like to invite you to join others in the grants community this summer as we make progress together toward our individual grant and fellowship goals.
If you are new to the grant-seeking process, I would like to learn more about any goals you may have related to grant or fellowship activity. Whether you just want to dip your toe in the process, or you have larger goals for this summer, please let me know so that I can best support you.
If you have already identified a funder you plan to approach, I invite you to join a Small Group Grant Gathering. And if one hasn't yet been created for your funder, please suggest one in the form, so that I can connect you with others with similar interests.

This summer we will again be offering Small Group Grant Gatherings (“Small G3s”) for faculty who have interest in a few specific funders. These small groupings will:
- meet as a group once or twice during the summer to discuss their scholarly work and any planned proposals (in the near term and in the next two to three years)
- serve as informal readers of each other’s grant or fellowship proposal drafts, one of the best practices to develop a successful proposal
- when CC expertise is available, have access to a faculty lead with experience in this funder. [See call for faculty leads below]
Faculty who are interested in applying to one of the following external funding programs in the next few years are invited to participate in these informal groups, especially those planning on a submission in 2024.
- Fulbright — we invite faculty who are interested in conducting research and/or teaching in over 130 countries. Faculty must hold U.S. citizenship by the application deadline each September. Faculty who join this summer will be led by a recent Fulbright grantee; the award announcement is forthcoming!
- National Endowment for the Humanities — we invite faculty who are interested NEH’s programs, such as the Summer Stipend and Fellowship programs and the Collaborative Research program
- National Science Foundation — we invite faculty in the natural and social sciences, all focus areas funded by NSF. Sessions will include a discussion of the RUI (Research at Undergraduate Institutions) Impact Statement, with a review of examples; for those earlier in the process, a discussion of preliminary "one-pagers” that would be submitted to appropriate program officers prior to preparing an application.
Additional Small G3s are welcome provided there is sufficient interest. To join or suggest a new G3, please complete the G3 Sign-up Form.
Small G3 groups may wish to form a SWARG through the Crown Faculty Center for support ongoing connection and engagement in the 2024-2025 academic year.
There are many CC faculty with expertise in external funding programs. In order to better leverage this expertise and support engagement in our grants community, I am seeking faculty who are interested in leading a Small Group Grant Gathering (G3) for a variety of funders this summer.
Eligibility:
- Faculty who have been successful with an external grant or fellowships and/or
- Faculty who have served on a review panel for a particular funder (see “Expertise Sought” below)
The Role:
With my support, the Faculty Lead will:
- Convene their G3 group in early June for a discussion of each person’s scholarly work and any planned proposals
- Meet individually with each faculty participant at least once – in person or via zoom – to discuss a proposal draft or other preliminary steps as appropriate
- For faculty participants preparing draft proposals this summer: provide substantive feedback (limited to 5-10 hours) on draft narrative(s) before the end of July 2024
I anticipate that each group will include 2 to 4 faculty participants.
Additional Support
I will support the Faculty Lead by working with faculty participants to
- Better understand each funding organization’s mission, review criteria, etc.
- Develop an individualized work plan based on the faculty member’s timeline
- Encourage sharing of proposal drafts among the faculty participants for informal feedback
- Reading draft documents and providing substantive feedback
Compensation
- The faculty lead will receive a $300 stipend for each faculty participant who attends both meetings in their Small G3 (stipend max of $1200 per Small G3).
- Faculty leads will receive an additional $600 to provide substantive feedback to faculty participants who prepare a draft narrative this summer (anticipated no more than 2 faculty participants per faculty lead). Faculty leads will set their own internal deadlines for receiving drafts this summer (likely mid- to late July).

- Fulbright
- National Endowment for the Humanities (or other funders in the humanities)
- National Science Foundation
A faculty lead has already been identified for each of the above, but more are welcome! I am seeking ~10 faculty with expertise in a variety of areas to provide this kind of summer support for fellow faculty.
