Bringing International Scholars to Campus

The Fulbright Scholar Program offers two opportunities to bring international scholars to campus.

#1: The Scholar In Residence (S-I-R) Program would bring a scholar from abroad for one or both semesters. Prior to preparing a proposal of this nature, faculty members should discuss their proposed project with one of the College's grants professionals (Ina Remus, Laura Hines or Tess Powers) in order to coordinate a discussion with the the dean of the faculty.

#2: The Outreach Lecturing Fund (OLF) would bring a scholar from abroad (who is already in residence in the US) for a brief visit to the CC campus.

Scholar In Residence (S-I-R) Program

Key points:

  • Small liberal arts colleges are given preference (along with community colleges and minority-serving institutions)
  • S-I-R provides stipend of up to $3145 a month, as well as travel expenses and allowance for two dependents. CC would need to plan on providing salary supplements and/or in-kind support.
  • S-I-R focuses on the needs of the institution. The program is designed to help leverage short- and long-term change for the institution.
  • If we have an individual in mind, we need to ensure that they haven't taught extensively in the U.S. in the past five years.
  • If we don't have an individual in mind, the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) can help match us with a visitor.
  • The program will entertain proposals in all disciplines "as long as [the application describes how] the scholar brings an international and/or comparative perspective to the department or institution."
  • The application should describe a program of activities for how the individual will be integrated into campus and community activities, with "the aim of strengthening international resources and programs and enhancing international engagement at the institution and in the surrounding community."
  • Joint proposal with another institution of higher education would be encouraged.
  • The program will entertain draft proposals through September.
  • The application deadlines is Nov. 1 each year (typically) for the following academic year.

Outreach Lecturing Fund (OLF) Program

The Outreach Lecturing Fund (OLF) provides funding for campuses to host Fulbright Visiting Scholars, already in the United States, for short-term (2- to 4-day) speaking engagements. The OLF travel award is designed to enrich both institutions and Visiting Scholars through lectures that will promote academic disciplines and cultural understanding. Additionally, the OLF seeks to build relationships and partnerships with institutions that are currently underrepresented within the Fulbright Program as a means to promote future opportunities. These Priority Institutions include: Minority Serving Institutions, Community Colleges, Small Liberal Arts Colleges, Women's Colleges and Art Colleges, and geographically underrepresented institutions.

General Eligibility:

  • The visiting scholar must go to a "priority institution" (which includes small liberal arts colleges)
  • The scholar must be on a grant of at least three months.
  • The application for a scholar to receive an OLF award must be submitted at least one month prior to proposed visit to Colorado College.
  • The scholar cannot participate in an OLF award within the last month of their Fulbright Grant.
  • Each scholar wishing to participate in an OLF award must have a valid SSN or ITIN at the time of application. The scholar will email a copy of their card to OLF@iie.org.
  • Travel must be at least 75 miles away from the scholars host institution to qualify.
  • Hosts are allowed to bring up to two Visiting Scholars to their campus per semester

Grant Duration: The length of the lecturer's stay at the institution will depend upon the particular interests of the academic community and the facilities available. The period, however, should allow an opportunity for the scholar to become acquainted with the host institution. A program of two to three days is suggested; a longer period may be advisable if a visit to more than one institution is planned.

Grant Amount: OLF will pay for the airfare based on the date the visit is approved, rounded up to the nearest $100 to cover ground transportation. (The scholar makes travel arrangements and is reimbursed upon our submission of an evaluation of the event.) CC is expected to supplement the award with local transportation, lodging, and meals. (Honorarium requires approval by OLF).

How to Identify a Scholar: Faculty and professional staff of U.S. colleges and universities can identify scholars to invite to their campuses for Outreach Lecturing Fund visits by consulting the Fulbright Scholar Directory and, under "Fulbright Scholar Type," clicking on the box for "Non-U.S. (Visiting) Scholars." Click on "Advanced Filters" to narrow your search by discipline, world area, etc. Click on the scholar's name (in red) to learn more about their host institution, project name, grant period, etc. (See next page for sample search.) After a suitable visiting scholar is identified, representatives of the inviting U.S. institution may contact the scholar directly via the faculty associate and host institution department information in the directory or they may contact CIES staff directly.

Summary of Application: 3-page application form detailing where the scholar will speak, etc. A completed flyer for marketing the lecture(s) (based on a template), and a letter of invitation to the scholar.
