The Feminist and Gender Studies Department is delighted to share that Misbah Lakhani ’24 (FGS Major, Bonner Fellow, and Triota President) will be starting a new position as Outreach Coordinator at Daya Houston after graduation.
Daya Houston is a non-profit organization that seeks to empower “South Asian survivors of domestic and sexual violence through culturally specific services and [to] educate the community to end the cycle of abuse.” Daya was first started by a small group of immigrant women in the early 1990s who wanted “to do something to give back to women and children in their community” and who felt that the Greater Houston Area was in need of “a compassionate and culturally sensitive organization for South Asian families affected by domestic violence.”
As Outreach Coordinator, Misbah will be responsible for raising awareness about Daya’s mission and services with the goal of reaching allies and underserved victims in the South Asian community. They will also work to create, support, and implement engaging opportunities that allow Daya to share information about available services, domestic violence, and the impact of abuse on individuals and communities.
When asked to reflect on the significance of this new chapter of their life, Misbah had this to say: “I am so excited to be pursuing this wonderful opportunity after graduation. I am immensely grateful for the Feminist and Gender Studies Department for preparing me for this next chapter. I wouldn’t be where I am without all of you!”
Congratulations, Misbah! We are so proud to know you and to see you giving back to your communities in Houston in ways that build on the knowledge you gained as a Feminist and Gender Studies major!
