The Packard Hall Recording Booth is engineered to capture the finest details of performances held within the space. Designed for classical, chamber, and large ensemble recording, the system preserves the hall's natural warmth and clarity while providing engineers with the flexibility to accommodate a wide variety of performances. From faculty recitals and visiting artists to student ensembles, composers, and the annual Summer Music Festival, the recording booth delivers professional-quality results for every performance.
Packard Hall is home to both a 9-foot Steinway Hamburg and a 9-foot Steinway New York grand piano, making it an exceptional venue for solo and ensemble performances. A permanently installed array of four Sennheiser MKH 8000 series condenser microphones with motorized positioning provides effortless, repeatable capture of orchestral performances, while additional microphones from the department's extensive collection can be incorporated to suit the needs of virtually any ensemble.
The recording booth features a dedicated 2023 Apple Mac Studio running Avid Pro Tools and Ableton Live for multitrack recording and editing. To ensure every live performance is preserved, an Allen & Heath ICE-16 sixteen-track recorder provides redundant backup recording. Transparent signal capture is provided by Grace Design m801 microphone preamplifiers, offering 8 channels of pristine audio conversion.
Critical monitoring is provided by a Grace Design m920 monitor controller paired with a set of Genelec 8030B nearfield monitors, giving engineers an accurate listening environment for recording, editing, and live streaming. Together, the exceptional acoustics of Packard Hall and the recording booth's professional-grade equipment provide students and faculty with a world-class environment for documenting their live performance and sharing it with the world.
