Program Summary

Master of Arts in Teaching Licensure Program

Colorado College's Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Initial Licensure program is a true 5th year program, during which recent Colorado College undergraduates continue the foundational coursework and practicum experiences begun during their undergraduate career while completing student teaching, an internship and a master's research project. 5 Years, 2 Degrees and a Career!

Interested applicants from outside of Colorado College may still be considered by completing four required Education courses at Colorado College the semester (or year) prior to the start of the MAT program. We feel those four classes, which provide critical foundations in multicultural education, educational psychology and culturally responsive teaching are vital to success in the MAT program.

Our focus is on the development of the whole child and best teaching practices for ALL learners. Students enrolled in our program will work collaboratively across all disciplines and will come to understand the continuum of learning from elementary through secondary in preparation for any age level or discipline in which they might teach.

During the duration of their teacher preparation students take education foundations coursework, educational psychology and at least one class focusing on diversity and equity in education, multicultural education or urban education. Students also engage directly with students in public school classrooms through progressively more intentional practicum experiences. In addition, students will have a solid depth and breadth of understanding in their chosen content area.

Students may be licensed in the following content areas: elementary education, K-12 art, music and world languages (French, German, Latin & Spanish) or secondary education in English, math, science and social studies.

Successful students in our program reflect on their personal and professional dispositions, come equipped with excellent academic writing skills in order to complete a master's research project and understand the necessary dedication and time needed to complete an intense course load. Successful graduate students in our program are quick learners, self-sufficient, and have the ability to transfer and integrate new knowledge.

Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education Endorsement

The Education Department at Colorado College has been approved by the Colorado Department of Education and recommended by the Colorado Department of Higher Education to offer the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education endorsement. The endorsement is offered in response to the critical need for Colorado K-12 educators to be effectively prepared to teach all learners. The endorsement was a natural fit as Colorado College's teacher preparation curriculum is built around culturally sustaining pedagogy. Equitable access to learning and authentic multicultural education is emphasized in all coursework. Interested students should contact Debra Yazulla Mortenson, Director of Teacher Educator Programs.

In compliance with Title II of the Higher Education Act, the following data for 2021-22 (the most recent reporting year) is provided: 13 students were enrolled, and 10 of those students completed the teacher preparation program. There were 5 full-time faculty members, and there were 5 supervising faculty for the teacher preparation program. Students participate in supervised student teaching for an average of 40 hours/week for a total of 16 weeks. The pass rate of teacher education students on the PRAXIS II content exam was 100 percent.
