Biochemistry Major Elective Course Research Substitution

Approval of nonacademic credit research experience in Biochemistry MajorPDF link

Students with substantial research performed during a summer may choose an alternate upper-level elective to count in lieu of the research block requirement for the biochemistry majors.

The research experience should meet the following criteria:

  1. Minimally, the student completed 120 hours of research (equivalent to one-block of full-time research).
  2. The research topic is sufficiently biochemical or chemical to be appropriate for a department presentation as part of CH490.
  3. The student wrote a detailed scientific communication at the end of their research period (report, poster, or presentation slides).

Students who have done summer research in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry should already meet the above criteria.  Students who have completed research projects in other CC departments or elsewhere, must:

  • Upload their final report, poster, or presentation slides.
  • Name of the institution and research advisor.
  • Approximate number of research hours completed.

The student’s Biochemistry major advisor will review the submission to approve the research requirement. Submissions should be submitted to the major advisor in the first block on campus after the research experience and no later than Block 1 of the student’s graduating academic year.

A Teams document will be created and shared with the department indicating such approval, including the date and the person approving it.

The student will be notified as to whether the criteria are met for a substitution.
