Surveys the history and concepts of Western astronomy as background for other cultural approaches to astronomy. Focuses on archaeostronomy and ethnoastronomy of Native Southwestern peoples, including ancestral Puebloans as well as modern Pueblo and Athabascan tribes. Explores relationships among astronomy, rock art, ritual, oral narratives, social patterns and beliefs systems. (Meets the Critical Perspectives requirement and the laboratory/field requirement in the Natural Sciences.) (Also listed as AN 211.) No prerequisites. May meet either the Critical Perspectives: Global Cultures or Scientific Investigation of the Natural World lab or field requirement.
