This course centers on ideas of space, place, and community and relates them to major theoretical approaches in sociology. It explores the history of urbanization and urbanism, how people are socially and spatially organized, how urban life affects social interaction, and the stratification of neighborhoods as it relates to inequality more broadly. Particular attention is paid to place-related topics such as housing, education, employment, crime, development, politics, and gentrification. (Not offered 2025-26).

Prerequisite: Sociology 228 and Sociology 229; or consent of instructor.
