SO118 - Deviance and Social Control
An examination of rule and norm-breaking behavior and theories about why individuals and groups engage in such behaviors. This course focuses on how a sociological understanding of deviance is distinct from biological and psychological explanations. The topics to be considered include the origins and functions of deviance, the institutional production and categorization of deviance, the impact of deviance on personal and social identity, deviant careers and the relationship between deviance and social change. A sociology of deviance is norm-breaking behavior. Sociology of social control examines how we prevent people from breaking norms. This course examines how norm-breaking behavior is labeled, how these definitions vary based on times and places and how they are reinforced or challenged.
