RS220 - Chekhov to Joyce: Inventing the Modern Short Story
Chekhov and Joyce are key figures in the modernist movement in literature, marked by the absence of dogmatism and meticulous attention to people and things. The plot arises from questions of character and social realities of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: namely, the trauma of repressions and poverty in Russia and in Ireland.
