MU235 - From Stage to Screen

Music is first and foremost a sonic experience, but one that relies significantly on the visual to convey meaning. Film, television, and the internet have fundamentally changed the ways in which we experience music. This course explores the vibrant world of musical performance and how a change of venue, from the stage to the screen, affects both our experience of the musical event and our understanding of it. Some of the transformations investigated include: film adaptations of Broadway musicals; the classical canon as soundtrack and subject; popular music as music video and video games; and the live broadcast of performance into alternative sites and surroundings.
