HY242 - Imperial Twilight: Austria-Hungary at the Fin-de-Siecle
Marked by extraordinary levels of linguistic, cultural, and religious diversity, the turn-of-the-twentieth-century Austro- Hungarian Empire did not conform to the increasingly exclusionary visions of national belonging that were gaining momentum across Europe in these years. Austria-Hungary was a space of artistic and intellectual innovation, of social experimentation, and of political liberalization. It was not, however, able to effectively stifle the growth of rightwing populist movements, which defined themselves in opposition to the cosmopolitan spirit that infused life in much of the empire, and which would eventually contribute to its fragmentation and collapse. Drawing from an array of different sources, this course traces the social, cultural, and political history of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from the late 19th century to the early years of WWII, when much of its former territory was incorporated into the Nazi empire.
