Topics in Creative Writing: Creative Nonfiction Writing fosters a safe space to engage confidence, vulnerability, and truth. The greater we embrace fearlessness, the greater the reward.

Welcome to Creative Nonfiction, a safe space to engage confidence, vulnerability, and truth. For four weeks, we’ll write with open attention, speaking up and speaking in, in attempt to achieve what Ntozake Shange calls “a voice that springs from real breath, a sweating body that speaks.” This outward and inward attunement is the foundation of our community of trust. The greater we embrace fearlessness, the greater the reward.
In the Audio Essay, students will write and revise, record and revise, and produce and revise their own stories, working in collaboration with KRCC. The class will culminate in a five minute audio essay.

In the Audio Essay, students will move from writing on the silent page to creating stories through a microphone. For the next three and a half weeks, the class will explore voice literally as an acoustic event, writing and producing an original audio essay in a supportive artistic community. The goal: to help writers discover, develop, and strengthen their capacities of nonfiction that is as compelling to the ear as to the eye. That said, the course will provide a mastery of the media lab, studying technology as language.
