In this course, we will explore the context of urban education through narrative. We will investigate dominant narratives of urban schooling, and surface the counter narratives that challenge oppressive policies, structures, and patterns in urban schools. This course is inquiry-focused: that is, this course is not a “how-to” or a survey course on issues facing urban education, nor it is a history of public or urban education. Instead, in this course we will focus on the systemic culture of public schooling, and how dominant/master narratives shape and influence educational administration, as well as students’ lives within urban schools.
