This seminar will engage in advanced art historical practices with a focus on the art and life of Rembrandt van Rijn (1609-1669). How can studying Rembrandt, a canonical “Old Master,” be relevant today? In what ways can engaging with Early Modern art help us grapple with the practice of art history today? With a historical frame, we’ll study Rembrandt within the artistic, cultural, political, religious, and economic contexts of Amsterdam, Europe, and the colonial world of the 17th century. In addition, students will engage with the historiography of the artist and examine a range of theoretical approaches to his paintings and prints over time, becoming familiar with the history and practice of art history. Last, we will discuss how Rembrandt’s work and approaches to it have influenced historians and artists in later periods and today. Students will develop skills with visual interpretation, research, theoretical applications, and oral discourse; expand their knowledge of art history as a discipline; and solidify their ability to understand and apply art historical methods.
